MCCAYSVILLE, GA — After a 19-hour manhunt, authorities say the suspect accused of shooting a McCaysville police officer is now in custody.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that 26-year-old Timothy Craig Ramsey was arrested after being found in a wooded area outside city limits, following a tip about a suspicious person.
Investigators say the shooting happened Friday night when officers responded to a call about a suspicious person along First Street. Police Captain Brantley Worley was struck in the face when Ramsey opened fire. Worley was airlifted to a Chattanooga hospital, where he remains in critical condition with a broken neck and brain bleed.
After the shooting, Ramsey ran off, evading law enforcement. SWAT teams surrounded a home where they believed he was hiding, but the standoff ended Saturday morning when officers learned he was not inside.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation, State Patrol, Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, and several other state and federal partners assisted in the search.
Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement during the manhunt, urging prayers for the officer and praising law enforcement for their work under dangerous conditions.
Ramsey faces charges of aggravated assault with intent to murder a police officer.
