DeKalb County police officer killed, suspect dead after shooting on Emory University campus

Active shooter reported at Emory University (WSB-TV)

ATLANTA, Ga. — A DeKalb County police officer was killed and a suspect is dead after a shooting on the Emory University campus in Atlanta on Friday.

DeKalb CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson said at a news briefing just after 8:30 p.m. that the officer, who they did not identify by name, was also a husband and father with a child on the way.

“This evening, my heart goes out to the family, as well as the DeKalb County family,” she said.

Officials did not announce the identity of the officer who was killed or the suspect. Officials did say the officer was a “beloved husband and father.”

“Run, hide, fight,” the Emory College social media post said.

Officials confirmed hundreds of police officers from multiple metro Atlanta counties responded to the shooting.

Mayor Andre Dickens and Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum held a press conference saying no civilians were shot by the gunman.

Mayor Dickens said authorities became aware of an active shooter around 4:50 p.m. The DeKalb officer responded to the report of an active shooter when he was shot and rushed to Emory University Hospital where he later died.

A nearby daycare was placed on lockdown and families later reunited with children.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp responded to the news of the shooting.
