FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 16, DNR game wardens in Forsyth County located a body using sonar equipment while searching for father of five, 43-year-old Dustin Valencia.
Valencia disappeared while kayaking on Lake Lanier Wednesday.
Authorities state they will not confirm the identity of the body until next of kin are notified.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office says Valencia’s last known location was south of Buford Dam Road.
Valencia’s Honda Accord was also found parked at Little Ridge Park.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office says Valencia was kayaking in the area and they have a photo of what the kayak looks like.
The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office says a citizen recently discovered an inflatable kayak and paddle at the lake, believed to belong to Valencia. Investigators now believe he may have entered the water using that kayak.
Valencia’s wife told authorities he was in good physical condition and had been training for a triathlon.
Multiple agencies were involved in the search effort, including the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Crews used boats, drones, and other resources to search the area around Buford Dam Road and the lake.
