ATLANTA — Georgia leaders are joining officials across the country in condemning political violence following the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Governor Brian Kemp called the attack “never the answer,” writing on X that disagreements should be resolved without violence. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger described the killing as “un-American,” urging Americans to recommit themselves to civility, respect, and the principles that strengthen democracy.

U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock called the shooting “awful and deeply appalling,” stressing that political violence must be condemned in every form. Senator Jon Ossoff said he was “shocked and horrified” by the news, echoing that violence has no place in politics.

The shooting happened during Kirk’s first stop in a planned series of visits to college campuses nationwide. Utah Valley University, where the event took place, will remain closed until Monday. President Trump has ordered flags flown at half-staff in Kirk’s honor.

Kerwin Swint, a political science professor at Kennesaw State University, said the tragedy reflects the nation’s heightened polarization, comparing the atmosphere to the unrest of the 1960s. “Such a shocking event, such a sad event, it’s like being dowsed with a bucket of cold water,” Swint said. “And I think that’s true whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat.”

Kirk, 31, co-founded the youth conservative group Turning Point USA at age 18 and rose to national prominence after backing Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.

Authorities said two people were initially detained for questioning but later released. No motive has been released. The suspect is still at large.
