ATLANTA — A man was found with a gunshot wound at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday afternoon.

Police say 59-year-old Douglas Smith intentionally shot himself in the upper left torso as he went up the escalator near baggage claim at the south terminal of the airport.

As Smith fell to the ground, a witness was able to kick the gun out of his hand. No one else was injured, police say.

Smith was rushed to the hospital. He faces firearms and reckless conduct charges.

Police said airport operations have not been affected.
