BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — A new survey finds most parents, students and school staff in Barrow County are in favor of adding new school security measures after the deadly Apalachee High School shooting in September of 2024.
According to school officials, the security measures would include additional resource officers, mental health enhancements, student ID badges, and weapon detectors.
“We’ve carefully and thoughtfully evaluated our options to enhance safety and security in our schools, and we are grateful for the Board’s support. Safety requires multiple layers of protection and these enhancements help make our schools more secure,” Dr. Dallas LeDuff, Barrow County School System Superintendent previously said.
There are 20 weapons detection devices in all three district high schools in Barrow County.
Earlier this month, classes were cancelled at Apalachee High School after a student was arrested for bringing a gun into school, according to police.
That incident happened just months after a mass shooting claimed the lives of two teachers and two students and injured several others.
The Board of Education recently voted to authorize the immediate purchase of OpenGate Weapons Detection System to be installed in three Barrow County high schools.
