Roswell police have identified the officer who was killed in the line of duty on Friday night.
Officer Jeremy Labonte, 24, was responding to a suspicious person report when the suspect opened fire, shooting him multiple times.
First responders tried to render aid to Labonte who was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Edward Espinoza. He is facing charges of murder, aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a felony.
“More information will be released in the coming days, but our priority now is to surround and support the family of our fallen officer and grieving department. We ask that your hearts and your prayers stand with us in doing the same,” the police department wrote in a social media post.
Labonte joined the Roswell Police Department in 2021, serving the Roswell community as a member of the nightshift patrol.
“He was universally beloved by all who were blessed to know him as a friend, a husband, a son, and a public servant. His absence now leaves a void that could never be filled,” the police department wrote.
Members of the public are invited to pay their respects to Officer Labonte at a memorial vehicle located at the Roswell Police Department Headquarters.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson addressed the media on Saturday night expressing gratitude for the support that the Roswell Police Department has received.
