DEKALB COUNTY, GA — Repair work has finished after three days of fixing a water main break on a busy north DeKalb roadway.
In a Facebook post published on Thursday, Commissioner Robert Patrick serving District 1 told one citizen that the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management explained to him why there was initial confusion of where the advisory was located in relation to the location of the water main break.
Patrick said that the DWM’s “water system relies on gravity and so even though the break is in the northern part of the county, the impact to water pressure is being felt in the southern part of the county. That is why the boil water advisory is in a different part of the county than the actual main break.”
The break on Clairmont Road near Dresden Drive happened Monday and was originally expected to be fixed early Wednesday afternoon.
Dekalb CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson says they’re also keeping an eye on the structural integrity of the road near where the break was. “We have structural engineers that continue to monitor the situation to ensure that once we make the repair that we are going in and dealing with the infrastructure, as well.”
Cochran-Johnson said the break is a sign of a larger issue. The 30-inch pipe on Clairmont Road at Dresden Drive was first installed in 1941. “You are seeing aging infrastructure that we as elected officials must deal with because water supply is imperative for economic development and growth,” she said.
Thousands are still under the boil water advisory in south DeKalb. Sediment got into the water system, so county officials are asking residents and businesses to run their water and make sure it’s clear before using it or drinking it.
Bottled water is still available at a RaceTrac and at local fire stations.
Crews are also carrying out scheduled maintenance on a different water main on North Druid Hills Road at Spring Creek Road.
